The United States Postal Service is one of the least expensive shipping and mailing service but they do not have the guaranteed speed of delivery that the more expensive options have.
You can buy stamp, track mail, send greeting cards, and find many other mail related services on their website.
They may not give you an exact mail delivery date, but they have existed for over 200 years, and deliver six day a week. They know how to deliver a package.
Non-Guaranteed Timely Delivery:
They will give you insured mail, priority mail, and many other options but they will not give you a guaranteed delivery date such as UPS and FedEx next day shipping.
Expensive Insurance Costs:
Insurance costs on mail delivery and package delivery are expensive, and claims can take several weeks.
Weak Tracking Information:
The tracking information only works for packages that are delivered and not packages that are in transit.
The United States Postal Service (USPS) is an independent agency of the United States government responsible for providing postal service in the United States. It is also known as the Post Office and U.S. Mail. It is one of the few government agencies explicitly authorized by the United States Constitution. USPS was founded in 1775 and is by far the oldest of the four major shipping carriers in the United States.
USPS is a major company in United States employing over 574,000 workers and operating over 260,000 vehicles. USPS owns the largest operating vehicle fleet in the world. The USPS is legally obligated to serve all Americans, regardless of geography, at uniform price and quality. The USPS has exclusive access to letter boxes marked “U.S. Mail” and personal letterboxes in the United States, but still competes against private package delivery services, such as UPS, DHL, and FedEx.
USPS has not directly received taxpayer-dollars since the early 1980s with a few minor exceptions. USPS has struggled severely over the past five to six years due to the recession and has been looking extensively to find other ways to receive funding.
A great low cost service for mail and smaller packages. I would recommend them for small packages or mail, and deliveries that do not need a specific date. However for specific delivery dates and larger packages I would not recommend using USPS.
DHL has a massive international presence with locations in 220 countries covers 120,000 destinations worldwide.
DHL operates hundreds of flights worldwide and can air deliver packages.
DHL has been shipping overseas since its origin in 1969.
Weak US Presence:
DHL has a weak US presence compared to the other major carriers USPS, Fedex, UPS.
DHL seems to have extra delivery costs associated with pickup and other surcharges that the other carriers do not have.
DHL Express is a division of the German logistics company Deutsche Post DHL providing international express mail services. Deutsche Post is the world’s largest logistics company operating around the world. DHL is a world market leader in sea and air mail.
Originally founded in 1969 to deliver documents between San Francisco and Honolulu, the company expanded its service throughout the world by the late 1970s. The company was primarily interested in offshore and inter-continental deliveries, but the success of FedEx prompted their own intra-U.S. expansion starting in 1983.
In 1998, Deutsche Post began to acquire shares in DHL. It finally reached majority ownership in 2001, and completed the purchase in 2002. Deutsche Post then effectively absorbed DHL into its Express division, while expanding the use of the DHL brand to other Deutsche Post divisions, business units and subsidiaries. Today, DHL Express shares its well-known DHL brand with other Deutsche Post business units, such as DHL Global Forwarding and DHL Supply Chain.
DHL is a great option for international shipping, however for local shipping you may want to choose one of the other major carriers.
Most Environmentally friendly:
Fedex has the highest percentage of environmentally friendly vehicles among the major carriers.
Fedex has timely shipping with overnight, two day, and fedex saver options.
Not Many Services:
They do not have as many services and options as USPS and UPS such as buying stamps off the website.
Smaller Fleets than UPS and USPS:
FedEx does not have the massive transportation fleets that USPS and UPS have accumulated over the years.
